——Difference Between Grade 304 and 304L Stainless Steel: Analysis of carbon content, corrosion resistance, and welding performance
Understand the crucial difference between Grade 304 and 304L stainless steel, focusing on carbon content and welding performance. MTSCO provides high-quality austenitic pipes compliant with ASTM standards for your specific project needs.
Among the austenitic stainless steel family, 304 and 304L are undoubtedly the two most widely used grades. Many customers often feel confused when selecting materials, but the core difference between the two lies in the carbon content in their chemical composition. L "stands for" Low Carbon ". The carbon content of standard 304 stainless steel can reach up to 0.08%, while the carbon content of 304L is strictly controlled below 0.03%.
This small difference in composition has a significant impact on material properties. During high-temperature welding, 304 stainless steel is prone to precipitate chromium carbide at grain boundaries, leading to intergranular corrosion. Low carbon 304L can effectively suppress this phenomenon, thus maintaining excellent corrosion resistance without the need for post weld annealing. This makes 304L an ideal choice for heavy-duty welded components or large equipment that cannot undergo heat treatment. In contrast, 304 has slightly higher mechanical strength and is suitable for conventional environments that do not require welding or can undergo solution treatment after welding.
MTSCO has been producing pipeline system products made of 304 and 304L materials for a long time. We conduct PMI inspection on raw materials and carry out full process quality tracking to ensure material stability and dimensional accuracy. The product complies with ASTM and EN series standards and can be used in various industrial environments. If you need further confirmation on whether to choose 304 or 304L for the project, please send us the operating parameters and we will provide you with selection suggestions and quotation information.
