Understand the feasibility and precautions of using stainless steel and brass pipes and fittings together
Can stainless steel and brass pipes and fittings be used together? This article analyzes the risks of electrochemical corrosion, mechanical connectivity, and application recommendations to help design industrial piping systems safer and more reliable.
First, from the perspective of electrochemical corrosion. Stainless steel and brass are metals in different potential ranges. If they are in direct contact and in a humid or conductive environment, galvanic corrosion is likely to occur, resulting in accelerated corrosion of brass parts. It is not recommended to directly connect the two in a long-term humid and highly corrosive medium environment unless effective insulation measures (such as the use of insulating washers, coatings, etc.) are taken to isolate the metal contact.
Secondly, in terms of mechanical connectivity and sealing, brass fittings (such as threaded fittings) usually have good processability and sealing performance, and it is feasible to use them with stainless steel pipes in low-pressure or temporary systems. However, in systems with high pressure, high temperature, or long-term reliability, it is recommended to prioritize the consistency of materials to reduce the adverse effects of differences in thermal expansion coefficients on the connection parts.
In addition, attention should also be paid to system maintenance and compatibility. If the system needs to be disassembled frequently, the use of different materials for connection will increase the complexity of maintenance and later risks, and a full assessment is required when selecting materials.
