——Applications of High-Purity Stainless Steel EP Tubing in Semiconductor and High-Purity Systems
316L Stainless Steel Electropolished Pipe and EP Tubing provide superior cleanliness, corrosion resistance, and ultra-smooth inner surfaces for semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, and high-purity gas systems. With low surface roughness and excellent weldability, EP tubing is essential for contamination-sensitive industries.
316L Stainless Steel Electropolished Pipe and EP Tubing are critical materials in high-purity fluid delivery systems, widely used in semiconductor, biopharmaceutical, food processing, high-purity gas, and laboratory systems. 316L is a low-carbon austenitic stainless steel containing 2%–3% molybdenum, offering excellent corrosion resistance and resistance to pitting corrosion. In chloride-containing environments, its corrosion resistance significantly outperforms that of 304 stainless steel, making it one of the mainstream materials for high-purity systems.
The core process of electropolished pipe is electropolishing (EP). This process uses electrochemical methods to remove microscopic irregularities from the stainless steel surface, resulting in a smoother and cleaner inner pipe wall. The surface roughness of standard mechanically polished surfaces is typically around Ra 0.4 μm, whereas high-standard EP tubing can be consistently controlled below Ra 0.25 μm, with some semiconductor-grade products even achieving Ra 0.13 μm. Lower roughness translates to fewer particle residues, lower bacterial adhesion rates, and more stable media purity.
ASTM A269, ASTM A270, and SEMI F20 are common reference standards for 316L EP tubing. Among these, the SEMI standard imposes stricter requirements on cleanliness, weldability, and surface condition, and is primarily used in semiconductor ultra-high-purity gas systems. To ensure product cleanliness, EP tubing typically undergoes ultrapure water cleaning, nitrogen-flushed packaging, and endoscopic inspection after production.
316L EP tubing also offers excellent weldability and low iron ion leaching. Industry data indicates that electrolytically polished 316L stainless steel can improve surface corrosion resistance by more than 20%, while effectively reducing the risk of contamination in fluid systems. Consequently, EP stainless steel tubing has become an indispensable material in high-purity industries.
